Basic Function:

Primary responsibility is operating the drop bottom furnaces. May be required to also perform material movement, shipping and receiving, inspector duties, as needed.

Principle Accountabilities: 

  • Material handling of non-preloaded product to heat treatable containers and from heat treatable containers back to customer containers per general loading procedure.
  • Implementation of all quality procedures as they relate to specific systems and/or customers.
  • Helping in all areas of production and quality as directed by the Team Leader or member of management.
  • Safe Forklift Operation – Must be a licensed operator.
  • Follow written procedures and work instructions.
  • Documenting any non-conformance in the process you discover as well as placing product in the hold/non-conform area per written procedures and work instructions.
  • Monitor and maintaining applicable departmental supplies.

Material Movement Accountabilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of process flow, material storage, and staging locations for both customer and heat treat containers.
  • Proficient in identifying container types by customer, use, and markings.
  • Follow and executing material movements required by the production schedule.
  • Completed training and OJT for Material Movement, passed proficiency test.

Inspection Accountabilities: 

  • Inspection and testing of all in-process and finished material to include, but not limited to, Brinell testing, Rockwell testing, and conductivity testing in accordance with ASTM, customer and divisional procedures.
  • Adhere to all customer specific and divisional documentation and tagging requirements. This includes documentation accuracy and completion.
  • React per divisional policy to identified non conforming product during any phase of the process.
  • Assisting in applicable material movements associated with all aspects of in-process and final inspection.
  • Complete all required Quality checks (daily cross checks, Gauge R&R’s, PM’s etc.…) as prescribed by divisional procedures.
  • Complete training and OJT for Inspection, passed proficiency test.

Drop Bottom Furnace Operator Accountabilities:

  • Follow all documented procedures and work instructions in accordance with the operation and management of the drop bottom furnaces and all associated quench tanks and age ovens.
  • Load all drop bottom furnaces in accordance with the production schedule and/or verbal communication from management.
  • Monitor all temperature controls and taking prescribed corrective actions to out of control conditions.
  • Unloading of all drop bottom furnaces and associated age ovens and moving product to proper location.
  • Maintain all solution and age log documentation.
  • Scan Process Control tags through the bar code system as required.
  • Manage the water level, temperature and position of all drop bottoms and quench tanks.
  • Secure all drop bottom loads prior to processing to ensure minimal part loss and/or product damage.
  • Verify PC tag accuracy with APC system.
  • Assist in misc. documentation and tracking that may be required to achieve a high level of external and internal customer service.
  • Perform all start up and shut down procedures for all drop bottom furnaces and associated age ovens.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or abnormalities to maintenance and Operations Manager.
  • Perform associated process control tag documentation and instructions.

Shipping and Receiving Accountabilities:

  • Receiving Inspection/review of incoming shipments and documentation to ensure accuracy, consistency, and conformance to divisional requirements.
  • Issue and generation of internal work orders and outgoing bills of lading.
  • Assist in the identification and tagging of customer products and containers in accordance with divisional procedures.
  • Perform daily physical inventories in accordance with both internal and external customer expectations.
  • Verification of incoming product and identification of the appropriate process. Additionally responsible for communication of relevant information to appropriate managers and team members. This includes, but is not limited to, contract review, new part verification, part entry, and parts placed in hold.
  • Assisting in customer drop-forward shipment as well as expediting service requirements.
  • Responsible for assurance of safe travel requirements of customer products, i.e., banding, wrapping, packaging, stacking, etc.
  • Communicate within and among all departments to provide information sharing necessary to provide total customer satisfaction.
  • Assisting in periodic customer contact via phone or personal visits.
  • Performing computer-related functions in accordance with departmental needs – reports, bills of lading, work orders, inventory, new part entry, etc.
  • Assisting in the safe loading and unloading of incoming and outgoing trucks.
  • Assisting in the proper generation, verification, and dispersion of certifications.
  • Complete training and OJT for Shipping and Receiving and passed
    proficiency test.

Production Scheduling Accountabilities: 

  • Understand the process flow, material storage, and staging locations for both customer and heat treat containers.
  • Be proficient in identifying customer container types and products.
  • Assist the Plant Manager with production scheduling.
  • Coordinate schedule with customer requirements.
  • Post furnace schedule to plant to maintain production around the clock.
  • Have all specials, samples, and quality initiatives noted and verbalized with supervisors.
  • Maintain and disseminate all production information, as needed.
  • Maintain inventory control with customers and internally on a daily basis.
  • Assist in customer interaction dealing with production and/or shipping and receiving topics within his or her learned expertise.
  • Responsible to gather and file any information deemed necessary by the Operations Manager.
  • Assist in all Plant Managers daily duties during times the Plant Manager is away from work.
  • ***Must have completed an OJT and be signed off by the Plant Manager***

Trainer Accountabilities: 

  • Assist in training new employees in the designated skill adders
  • Coach, mentor, and teach new employees.
  • Verify all work to established standards.
  • Possess the designated skill for at least 24 months prior to being awarded trainer designation.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of proficiency in designated skill adders before being awarded trainer designation.
  • Can only be awarded the trainer designation for one specific skill.
  • Completed training and OJT for Trainer, and signed off.

Knowledge Skills/Abilities:

  1. Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds.
  2. Above average work record.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  4. Must be willing to work toward attaining company goals and objectives.
  5. Must be willing to work in shared responsibility and a team-based work environment.
  6. Must be capable of learning multiple tasks and willing to stay abreast of changes and learn new tasks.
  7. Must possess a positive attitude, be dependable, reliable, self-motivated, and trustworthy.
  8. Must have 6 months of tenure from being awarded your last skill to be eligible to earn an additional skill.
  9. Must pass a written and or practical certification test for each skill level before being awarded that particular skill.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Forklift experience.
