EMPLOYMENT POSTING
Title: Housing Support Specialist FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly
Department: Supportive Services Revised: August 2020
Reports To: Asset & Housing Support Manager
PURPOSE: The Housing Support Specialist provides direct supportive services to individuals in ICAN Housing’s scattered-site Permanent Supportive Housing programs across Stark County, with a goal of helping participants retain housing and identify and work toward personal goals. Participants are formerly homeless and suffer with severe and persistent mental illness. This position requires close collaboration with agency teammates, case managers, benefit providers, and behavioral health and substance abuse service supports.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Engage and develop a rapport with participants in ICAN Housing Permanent Supportive Housing programs to help them remain housed, become stable and work toward self-identified goals
- Work with participants to develop and implement a Stable Home, Stable Life plan (SHSL) of their design and intended to result in housing retention, income gain and improved quality of life as defined by the participant
- Connect participants to community resources through advocacy, arranging or providing transportation, attending appointments, assisting with applications, etc.
- Gain proficiency and utilize best practices from the field including motivational interviewing, harm reduction, etc.
- Walk shoulder to shoulder with participants demonstrating healthy living skills and effective decision making while maintaining appropriate boundaries
- Work with Property Management and Maintenance to address participant housing issues
- Observe and document participant behaviors that could indicate deterioration in their condition or well-being, and work to connect them to proper supports including mental health and substance use services
- Coordinate services and responses with case managers and other professionals
- Maintain documentation of tenant services and outcomes in client database and as required by funders
- Provide transportation to clients utilizing employee’s own personal vehicle; receiving mileage reimbursement
- Other duties as assigned
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in related field
- One to two years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience working with diverse, vulnerable populations
- Able to read and understand correspondences, policies and procedures
- Sufficient writing skills for completing reports, case notes, and other professional documentation as needed
- Competency with Microsoft Word and Outlook, Excel a plus
- Above average conflict resolution and problem solving skills
- Ability to maintain composure when dealing with emotional/stressful situations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have valid Ohio Driver License and valid/current automobile insurance
- Travel will be required. Most travel will be local except for occasional state level trainings
- The Housing Support Specialist meets with participants in their homes and in the community
Hours, Pay, Benefits
Monday – Friday 8am to 5pm, $16 per hour, nice benefits package (Aultcare), paid holidays & generous PTO
